The Turtleback waterproof camera bag is a 45L carry-on compatible hiking and travel bag designed to maximize gear protection without compromising support and usability. This project was a test pilot for some innovative ideas I had, as well as practice for constructing a backpack- this was my first!
This bag was designed to have an innovative folding waterproof rear-access opening so the user can place the bag down in muddy/wet/dirty conditions and have full view of their equipment, unlike traditional waterproof bags that use top access or single zip designs. To accomplish this, a new z-shape roll closure technique was designed and explored. Additionally, a unique and custom semi-internal frame was designed and implemented to allow for maximum access without sacrificing support. To protect equipment, the back quick stash compartment was constructed of a foam that was cut with an auxetic pattern to improve stretch and gear accommodation while protecting the main interior from the ground when put down. The backpack straps were made completely removable for stowage during travel and for future upgrades or maintenance. Strap attachment in unorthodox positions was explored, most notably with the bottom of the straps terminating in the bottom of the bag, making it easier to take the bag off due to the lower strap termination. Roll closure straps act as side compression straps as well. A top strap allows for overloading the bag. Side stretch pockets and handles complete the design.
